CHAPTER HERSTORY

The Alpha Zeta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated was chartered on Virginia State University's campus on March 26,1936. The charter members include: Olla Davis, Olla Logan, Dorothy Smith, Alice Butcher, Elizabeth Brown, Katherine DeShields, & Ruth Lash.

Soror Sylvainia Preston

Soror Sylvainia Warner Preston was initiated into the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. at Virginia State University on November 18, 1978. Soror Preston graduated from Virginia State Dec 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education and Recreation. Soror Preston has served in numerous positions in the Delta Beta Sigma Chapter in Norfolk, including Basileus (President). Soror Preston served as the Northeastern Region Area 2 Coordinator 1992 – 1996; the Undergraduate Chapter Coordinator 1996-2000 and Regional Syntaktes 2000 – 2004. She is a Life Member and Ruby of Sigma Gamma Rho. Soror Preston has retired from teaching after 30 years and is a Realtor.

Soror DeShauna Barber

Soror Deshauna Barber was initiated into the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. at Virginia State University on April 16th, 2009. Soror Deshauna Barber has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Virginia State University and a Master of Science degree in Computer Information Systems and Services from The University of Maryland University College. Soror Barber is a United States Army Reserve Captain, Former Miss USA, and a Motivational Speaker. In 2016, Soror Barber was the first Soldier to win the prestigious title of Miss USA. She also represented Universe 2016 Manila, where she was among the top nine finalists. Soror Barber encourages and inspires people as a powerful Motivational Speaker.
